22nd May - Food, glorious food!
This week, the children enjoyed a fantastic DT Week where we focused on designing and making a healthy picnic lunch. Throughout the week, the children developed a range of practical cooking skills and learnt about the importance of healthy eating, food safety and hygiene.
We began by discussing where our food comes from and explored the difference between pastoral and arable farming. The children were very interested in learning about how different foods are produced and the journey food takes before it reaches our tables. We also talked about the importance of making healthy choices and what makes a balanced packed lunch.
The children then designed their own healthy picnic lunches, carefully thinking about the different food groups and how to include a variety of healthy foods. Once the planning was complete, we moved on to the exciting part — preparing and making our picnic!
The children worked brilliantly while preparing the food. They practised important cooking skills such as chopping peppers, peeling carrots and grating cheese safely and carefully. One of the highlights of the week was making bread rolls with Mrs Bennett. The children followed instructions carefully, measured ingredients accurately and enjoyed watching their bread rise before baking. The classroom was filled with delicious smells as the bread cooked!
Throughout the week, we regularly discussed food hygiene and safety, including washing hands thoroughly, preparing food safely and using equipment carefully. The children showed great responsibility and teamwork while working together in the classroom kitchen environment.
To finish our wonderful DT Week, we took our healthy picnic outside to enjoy together in the sunshine. The children loved sharing the food they had prepared and were very proud of everything they had achieved during the week. It truly was a glorious DT Week filled with creativity, teamwork and lots of delicious food!
Have a lovely and relaxing half term.
