Friday 15 May 2026 15th March - there's something fishy going on... In Literacy, we have been continuing our learning about poetry and writing list poems based on Clare Bevan's Queue for the Zoo poem. We explored how poets use exciting verbs to make their writing more interesting and help the reader imagine the animals moving. The children thought carefully about different zoo animals and chose verbs to describe their movements, such as “slither like a snake”, “stomp like an elephant” and “swing like a monkey”. The children enjoyed performing their ideas aloud and using actions to match the movements. We are looking forward to publishing our own zoo poems and sharing them with the children in Reception.

Friday 8 May 2026 8th May - Powerful poetry! This week in Literacy, Year 1 have continued exploring poems. We have really enjoyed working together to create our own rhyming poem. We used the Caribbean counting poem as inspiration and then combined all of our ideas to create a fantastic class poem. We are looking forward to rehearsing our poem and performing it to another year group next week.

We discussed how Advent is a time of waiting and being patient, and that it's about much more than just chocolate! The children shared some thoughtful ideas and really enjoyed linking their learning to the Christmas season.

Friday 5 December 2025 5th December - feeling festive in Year 1 Year 1 have had a wonderfully festive start to December with our annual Deco Day! The classroom was buzzing with excitement as we spent the morning making a range of Christmas crafts. The children created beautiful beaded snowflake decorations, carefully threading beads onto pipe cleaners to make sparkling ornaments. They also made handprint calendars—a lovely keepsake for the year ahead—and worked together to create colourful paper chains that now stretch across our classroom and bring a cheerful, festive feel.
