Caribbean Day

As part of DT week, we worked in small groups to prepare dishes for a Caribbean feast including jerk chicken kebabs with traditional Caribbean seasoning. We were very careful about hygiene because we were working with raw chicken. We ensured work surfaces, hands and aprons were cleaned before and after handling raw chicken. We also made rice and peas, tropical fruit salad, plantain and sugared oranges.

In the afternoon, We were fortunate to receive a visit from three sisters who came to talk about their childhood in the 1960s.  The two eldest, Jean and Patsy, travelled over as part of the Windrush generation, while Monica, the youngest, was born in England a little later.  We were able to ask our historical questions, feel empathy towards the children they’d once been and handle a range of wonderful Caribbean artefacts!

The day culminated in a delicious BBQ. What a memorable and enjoyable day it was for all!
